An introduction to Ballet & Dance
Ballet is a form of performance dance, which often includes mime and acting, and has been around since the15th century. With its own vocabulary, it is often the foundational technique learnt by dancers prior to specialising in many other dance forms. Some ballets use the interpretation of dance to tell a story, others use the structural artform as an end in itself.
As with music and art, ballet has evolved over time and has clearly defined styles by period, such as classical, romantic, expressionist, neoclassical, modern and contemporary. Raymond Gubbay continues to champion ballet and dance accompanied by live orchestras, be that classical, modern, contemporary, tap, latin or ballroom.
How will I know what's going on?
In our programmes you'll find a synopsis or explanation of the event, which is often useful to read before the performance starts. We have some synopses on this website which may be useful.
What time should I get there?
It's a good idea to get to the theatre around half an hour before the show starts to get to your seat, particularly if you are collecting tickets at the box office, or wish to buy a programme or order interval drinks.
What should I wear?
This is completely up to you! Some people see coming to the theatre as a reason to dress up, others prefer to dress more casually. Whatever your preference make sure you'll be comfortable.
